Reading Counts: Reading Counts is a program developed by Scholastic, that tests students on books they have read. We have about 1500 titles in our collection that are Reading Counts titles. They are marked with a bright orange sticker on the top of the book spine. After students have read a title they come into the Media Center and take a 5 question computerized test. If they pass the test they are given slips of paper to add to the prize drawing box. Every 4-6 weeks we have a televised prize drawing, and students who have passed tests can win prizes. At the end of the school year, our Student Council awards gift certificates to the top three readers at NHMS.
7th Grade Book Bowl: Students in 7th grade will participate in Book Bowl. There are sixteen titles on the Book Bowl list, and students will sign up to be “experts” on books for their contact class. In November, contact classes will compete with each other to answer questions on each book. The contact class with the most points will be invited into the Media Center for pizza and pop. A $10.00 gift certificate will be awarded to the 7th grade student with the most RC points on the Book Bowl books.
8th Grade Husky Quest: 8th graders participate in Husky Quest in the fall. They can read any of the Reading Counts titles and take a test. If they pass the test they are givein coupons for prizes. The prizes are awarded weekly. At the end of the competition the student with the most Reading Counts points will win a $10.00 gift certificate to the Husky Den.
